VenmoI have a very beautiful, antique sterling silver hollowware serving dish for sale. This piece is signed as Gorham Manufacturing Company, one of America's largest and most prestigious silver producers in history. Founded in Rhode Island in the mid-1800's, producing silver servingware well into the 1960's or 70's when it was sold through several different companies including Texton, Dansk, Department 56 and I believe ending under Lenox.
This silver dish has the three distinct markings that are Gorham Silver Trademarks of a Lion, an Anchor and a G. It's marked STERLING and is signed with the model number A1647M. The small symbol below the model number marks the year its made and from my research I believe it was made in 1902, represented by the mallet head image. The A at the front of the model number was commonly used for intricate, hollowware pieces made in early 1900's and often referenced a bowl or dish purpose. The M often referred to Massive or Massive Wear, often used to indicate their heavy weight metal items.
This piece appears to be an intricate poppy flower pattern, achieved through repousse, which is the artistic method of hammering one side of a precious metal to create a raised, high relief image or pattern on the other side. It's very detailed with some beautiful designs and scrollwork on the edges and between the flowers. It features the deeper dish center area for bread, or other desired food items and then has a nice three-dimensial wave pattern around the raised edges.
This dish is definitely tarnished, as you can see in the images, but has such a charm to it with its design and patina. If someone had the talent of cleaning and polishing this piece up, it will be gorgeous! It's hard to capture how it really looks and feels in pictures. Thete are some minor dents, surface scratches and typical signs of wear but no major damage or wear.
Overall dimensions are just under 11 inches wide by 14 inches long, edge to edge, and stands about 1 1/2 inches raised from the table surface. The center serving dish area is roughly 6 inches by 9 inches or so. This sterling silver piece weighs just over 16.6 ounces, or 470 grams, which is about 15.1 Troy ounces. Spot value for a troy ounce of silver is over $850 today.
I am asking $1,000 OBO, cash or Venmo, for this antique dish. Comes from a smoke free home and has always been stored inside, in a bin or container. Pick up in South Ogden near the DMV.
