ApplePayAntique English Victorian balloon-back side chair, circa 1840, with a hand-carved rose and floral crest, pierced center, serpentine mid rail, and front cabriole legs with carved leaf detail. The overstuffed seat is worked in hand-stitched wool needlepoint, an oval floral bouquet in rose, gold, sage, and cream on a soft blush ground, finished with matching trim.
We had this appraised in England, and it was valued at $350-$380. The appraisal describes it as "1 single salon chair with front cabriole legs, crested top and overstuffed seat with floral tapestry, circa 1840." I have the appraisal document and posted a photo of it, though I don't know how legible it is in the photo.
Works as a sitting room or visiting room chair, accent chair, vanity chair, desk chair, entry chair, or extra dining seat.
DIMENSIONS
Overall height: approximately 35 in
Seat width: approximately 18 in
CONDITION
Solid and sits square with no wobble. Honest wear consistent with roughly 185 years of use. The finish shows scuffs and light surface losses on the legs, and a worn spot along the top edge of the crest on the back side, visible in the photos. Where the front legs meet the seat rail, the joint line shows, and there is some old shrinkage separation in the rail. It is structurally sound and fully usable as seating. I would treat it as an accent or occasional chair rather than an everyday dining chair. The needlepoint is intact with no holes or unraveling, with age-related softening and light fading to the ground fabric.
Search terms: Victorian balloon back chair, antique parlor chair, needlepoint chair, tapestry seat chair, Rococo Revival, carved rose chair, cabriole leg chair, 19th century antique, mahogany side chair, antique vanity chair.
