Velvet season is in full swing, and how you handle your buck’s antlers in the field can make or break their condition for preservation. Once velvet is damaged or spoiled, there’s no bringing it back—so take these steps to keep them flawless until they reach your taxidermist:

Handle with care – never drag your deer by the antlers Keep them cool – if you can’t get to your taxidermist immediately, store them in shade covered with a breathable cloth Cape Correctly - do not make any accidental knicks to the velvet while caping off your deer Protect during transport – prevent any rubbing or abrasion Limit contact – velvet is delicate, so touch only when necessary Preserve fast – get to me or freeze within 24 hours.
