Familiar with labs and GSP but not GWPs? Here’s a general idea for you: German Wirehaired Pointers or GWPS, are a pointing breed. They are bred to point game, and with training will hold a point until the hunter releases them. Ours have been great upland game hunters, and love waterfowl hunting with us. GWPs have temperaments that are more like a working breed than like a retriever or a setter, and are smart, and love to stay busy. They love swimming & retrieving decoys we throw or shoot for them. They are smart and observant- bred to work independently and make their own decisions while hunting the field. We feel like this is what makes them a little more mature or calmer than some other hunting breeds. GWPs want to be with their families all the time, and LOVE to be house dogs. They generally like people, and can be protective of their homes and families. They’re generally good with kids when raised with kids. These pups have had extensive play & snuggle time with kids and other dogs. GWPs are nicknamed Velcro dogs— because they’ll stick by your side. We had a past pup learn to go up the play set and slide down over and over with our kids. GWPs are a relatively healthy breed, with no serious health issues common to their breed. These pups got a clean bill of health at their 8 week vet check. A GWPs wire-coat means they typically shed less than longer coated dogs, or short-coated breeds like beagles, labs, and short haired pointers, but , that being said, you’ll still know there’s a dog in the house 😆 An occasional bath and brushing / hand striping will keep their coat shiny and clean.
