PayPalThis is an exceptionally early post-war G3L. The frame number is 955, with frame numbers reportedly beginning at 501. According to the Matchless Owners Club dating service, the original factory records were lost, but the frame and engine numbers appear consistent with an early 1946 machine. The engine is stamped 46/G3L 714. The motorcycle carries a London HGH registration and was registered September 9, 1945.
This has never been subjected to a full restoration. Instead, I have given it what the British affectionately call an “oily rag refurbishment”—and it has remained that way for 51 years.
Everything is original except for:
New exhaust and header pipe
Replacement band around the primary case
Replaced wiring
Oil tank cleaned and repainted
Battery holder cleaned and repainted
New front and rear tires
Most importantly, everything works. The headlight, switches, horn, dynamo charging system and other electrical equipment are functional. It is remarkable to see an approximately 80-year-old motorcycle still operating as it should.
