A demijohn is a large, narrow-necked glass or earthenware container, often bulbous and sometimes encased in wickerwork, used primarily for storing and fermenting liquids like wine, beer, and vinegar. Also known as a carboy or jimmyjohn, it has roots in the French "dame-jeanne" (Lady Jane) and Persian "qarabah," and its distinctive shape and large capacity made it useful for holding significant volumes of liquids.
