VenmoIt is with a heavy heart that we need to re-home our 18-month-old Catalina Macaw, Maui. Due to sudden life changes, it will be impossible for us to care for him properly in the near future. This is especially difficult because, in my 60+ years of owning birds, Maui is truly one of my absolute favorites.
Maui was purchased about a year ago when he was roughly six months old. He has not been DNA tested, so we presume he is male based on certain behavioral traits, though this is not guaranteed. When we first brought him home, Maui had very little early human interaction and was effectively untamed. Thanks to his young age, along with patience and decades of hands-on bird experience, I spent many hours earning his trust and ensuring he had consistently positive experiences with all people—not just me. The result is a confident, affectionate, and people-friendly macaw.
Physically, Maui is a stunning and hard-to-find Catalina Macaw, widely considered one of the most beautiful macaw hybrids. Catalina macaws are captive-bred (Scarlet × Blue-and-Gold) and are not found in the wild. His coloration is a striking blend of orange and yellow paired with rich blue and green tones, heavily influenced by his lineage. With proper care, Catalina macaws commonly live 50–60 years, with some living well beyond that—making Maui a true lifelong companion.
Today, Maui is sweet, playful, gentle, and loving, with that classic Catalina “feisty” streak when he has an opinion. He steps up reliably, loves head scratches, enjoys cuddling and interactive play, and gives only mild warning nips when he’s being stubborn or expressing a preference (such as not wanting to go back into his cage). He’s easy to read once you get to know him.
He’s already a good talker and currently says: Hello, Hello Lover, Hi, Nice to see you, Shower, and Whooohooo—and he’s still young and very capable of learning more. Catalina macaws are highly intelligent and require daily interaction, enrichment, and toys to prevent boredom. Maui is happy entertaining himself in his cages when properly supplied, but like most macaws, he wants to be involved in everything you do.
Like all macaws, Maui can be loud, messy, and demanding of attention. He wants to share meals with you and has little interest in eating alone if you’re nearby. If you’re at the table, he wants to be there too—preferably on your shoulder. He would be in bird-heaven sitting with you all day, and he’s equally content quietly perching on you and preening himself while you watch a movie or read a book.
Maui requires a balanced diet of high-quality large-bird pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts. His favorite “off-menu” items include breads, cereals, steak, chicken, bananas, and pea pods. He also loves bathing—we place a shallow tray on top of his cage, which he happily turns into a full waterpark, splashing and entertaining himself (and us).
He tolerates being in his cage but strongly prefers his perches or your shoulder. He enjoys exploring the house and has lived peacefully alongside our dog and cat. I believe he would likely do well with other birds, though that may soften his strong human bond.
Maui has always been treated with love and respect. He has never experienced fear, anger, or threat from humans, and finding the right home—one where he will continue to feel safe, engaged, and deeply loved—is our number one priority.
We are located in Heber City, Utah, approximately 45 minutes from Salt Lake City.
Rehoming fee: $7,500 — a very fair price for a young, talking, well-socialized Catalina Macaw. Maui comes with multiple cages, stands, and accessories at no additional cost; these will go with him.
No deposits, no shipping, and no exceptions. You must come meet him, interact with him, and pass my qualification process. As with most macaw breeds, Maui would not be a good “first bird,” and we will only consider those who have had sufficient large-bird experience. That said, if you’re looking for a smart, affectionate, lifelong companion who will provide decades of interaction and personality, Maui is truly special.
Call, text, or PM me for more information or to set a time to meet Maui.
