PayPalKelty Kids kid carrier backpack. It comes with a detachable sun and rain cover that stores right in the backpack. It also includes a never-used kid changing pad with its own carrying compartment inside.
The hip strap is adjustable in both length and height so it can be quickly sized to fit different adults. The child restraint system adjusts easily for kids from around 6 months up to about 4 or 5 years old. There's plenty of storage, including a separate pocket for a 3L water bladder, plus a detachable zip-off daypack so you can leave the main carrier at camp and just take the smaller pack with you.
We love this backpack. This is the second one we've owned. We bought the first already heavily used, and eventually the fabric became brittle after years of hard use with our first two kids. We loved it so much that we bought this newer version for our second two children.
The early generation packs came with a little mirror on a rope, which we kept with this one — and it’s surprisingly useful. You don’t have to stop hiking to check on your kid; you can just glance in the mirror.
In our experience, this is the best kid carrier out there. We’ve taken it through some pretty rough terrain — branches, trees, slot canyons, and rocky trails — and the protective metal cage keeps your child safe on your back the whole time. The sun/rain cover also helps shield them from overhanging branches. These packs sell for $400 new.
