Title: "Twixt Iron and Gold - Behold I show you a mystery"
Artist: Arthur V. Diehl
Year: 1919
Details:
Painting: The mood in the United States in 1919 was a mix of relief, optimism, anxiety, fear, and unrest. It was a year of dramatic transition after World War I, and Americans were trying to adapt to a rapidly changing society. This painting marks a striking departure from Arthur V. Diehl’s more familiar output of impressionistic landscapes and coastal scenes, positioning him instead within a broader dialogue of spiritual allegory that emerged in the early twentieth century.
Arthur Vidal Diehl (1870 – 1929) was a prominent English impressionist landscape artist. Diehl was born in London, England, but for most of his career, he lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he painted Old World and New World landscapes. At the age of 15, on the recommendation of Royal Academy President Sir Frederic Leighton, he moved to Milan, Italy to study under Milanese artist Luigi Stefani. Diehl's Old World subjects include scenes from Italy, Morocco, England, and the Netherlands. His subjects in the United States include Cape Cod, Boston, St. Augustine, Florida, and New York City.
