SUMMARY
Pepper is a 6-year-old mare who could be your new broodmare. She has extensive trail and arena experience and is friendly, well-trained, and easy to handle. She had one serious incident spring of 2026 where she bucked and reared, but a veterinary exam found only minor back concerns and no clear cause for the behavior. I am selling her because I don't have the time to consistently work with and monitor her, despite the vet believing she can still be ridden carefully and bred without complications. I cannot recommend riding with her back...but I also can't say it isn't possible, she was awesome to ride all last year.
MORE DETAILS
Pepper is a 6 year old mare. She loves people, has been ridden a lot on trails and in an arena. HOWEVER this past year she bucked, reared and bucked until my mother was OFF her back. I took Pepper into the vet. Her back isn't perfect, the lump isn't bone, the vet says her dorsal bones are close, but they aren't hitting each other. However he could see potential pain now or in the future depending on where the saddle is sat. Our Australian saddles stay off her lower back but I have a hard time getting on not knowing if her back is going to be hurting that day or not and continuing to ride her.
The Vet says he doesn't think she would have any complications AT ALL breeding. He x-rayed her back, as soon as he emails the report I will post it or you can call him at Rocky Mountain Equine. He says he doesn't see complications riding but be careful going forward just in case. I love her tons, she is young, but she backs, trailer load, stands for the ferrier, has been around children, dogs and cats, (no children do NOT ride her they've just been around for brushing). She is a good sturdy weight and is muscled from the trail riding.
She is neck reined and so incredibly sensitive. Happily moves with a cluck, no spurs needed. She doesn't love having a leg on her, because she is used to moving with a cluck first. If she has a stubborn day a quick swish of your reins and the laziness is gone. She has ridden in large groups but also with a single other horse. Alone she is more skittish but still has been ok.
Video of her in different gates, its limited by the 30 second limit. Her trail rides are generally 2-3 hours long. She goes through water after a sniff. Her darker color is her winter coat. Her coloring changes drastically through the year. She has had this years round of shots as well as her hooves trimmed in May. She doesn't use shoes and is extremely sure-footed on all terrain. In all I truly don't know if she was upset do to her back or being a mare during breeding season, I unfortunately don't have the time to work with her everyday to do things that would help her back stay strong if that happens to be the case. The vet didn't seem sure that it was her back that was hurting that day. She would be a lovely broodmare but I don't have the means to breed her.
When I get the vet report I will attach it. Until then she is here. Text me to see or buy. I will be out of town from 6/17-6/28 so response time will be slower then.
