VenmoThe JVC 4VR-5445 is a beast with dual power supplies!
Really special and increasingly hard-to-find JVC 4VR-5445 4-channel quadraphonic receiver from the golden age of Japanese HiFi.
This isn't simply a stereo receiver with four speaker outputs. The 4VR-5445 was designed around four amplifier channels, extensive quadraphonic processing, separate front/rear controls, and JVC's unusual BTL (Balanced Transformer-Less) mode, which allows the amplifier channels to be reconfigured for higher-powered conventional 2-channel stereo operation. BTL (Balanced Transformer-Less) stereo mode — combines pairs of amplifier channels to provide substantially greater power for conventional 2-channel stereo playback.
I've thoroughly cleaned, tested and spent considerable time listening to this receiver. It is working well and sounds excellent. The internal construction is impressive too, including two substantial power transformers and a chassis packed with circuitry.
Highlights • True vintage 4-channel quadraphonic receiver • Four power-amplifier channels • Dual power transformers • BTL stereo mode for increased power in 2-channel operation • Rated 21 watts × 4 continuous into 8Ω • Rated 23 watts × 4 continuous into 4Ω • 200 watts total IHF dynamic power — 50W × 4 into 4Ω • JVC S.E.A. 5-band equalization controls for front and rear channels • SFCS (Simulated Four Channel System) for creating a 4-channel sound field from conventional stereo sources • Matrix quadraphonic decoding • Extensive 2-channel and 4-channel source connections • Multiple phono connections • Connections for front and rear speaker systems • FM/AM tuner • Classic JVC blacked-out tuning display • Wood cabinet • Made in Japan
One of the coolest features is the BTL system. Rather than letting the four amplifier channels sit unused when listening in conventional stereo, JVC provided a way to reconfigure the amplifier for substantially greater 2-channel output.
The separate front and rear S.E.A. equalizers are another unusual feature, giving you five bands of adjustment for each pair of channels.
Condition / Service I've gone through this receiver personally and it has been: • Thoroughly cleaned inside and out • Controls and switches cleaned • Fully tested • Extensively listened to after testing It presents very nicely for its age. This unit is clean, inside and out, it is in fantastic shape. Of course, it's not perfect, after all it is a roughly 50-year-old component, but it is one of the nicest pieces I've owned.
This is a vintage electronics component and is being sold as such rather than represented as a completely restored/new component.
A Very Unusual Piece of JVC History Vintage Pioneer, Sansui and Marantz receivers are fairly easy to find. These early JVC 4VR quadraphonic receivers are much less common, particularly in nice working condition.
Take the full wood case (just like found on high end receivers like McIntosh, Marantz, Pioneer, etc.) and you can see just how ambitious the design was: two large power transformers, four amplifier channels and a substantial amount of circuitry devoted to its stereo and quadraphonic capabilities.
It's a fascinating receiver for a vintage HiFi collector, JVC collector, quadraphonic enthusiast, or someone who simply wants something different from the usual 1970s receiver. And despite all of the quadraphonic capability, you don't need a quad setup to enjoy it — it works very well as a conventional 2-channel stereo receiver.
I work in South Salt Lake and live in Eagle Mountain, so I'm happy to meet somewhere in between. If you'd like to hear it before buying, I'm also happy to demo it at my house.
