Beautiful pair of antique-style French lithographs depicting historic Rome, including the Colosseum, Arch of Constantine and Roman Forum.
These appear to be from the important 19th-century work Rome dans sa Grandeur, published in Paris and Nantes by Henri Charpentier around 1870, with artwork/lithography attributed to French artist Philippe Benoist and figures by Adolphe Bayot.
The Colosseum print is marked:
“Rome dans sa Grandeur” “Ph. Benoist del. & lith. – Fig. par Bayot” “Nantes, lith. Charpentier, Edit. Paris, quai des Augustins, 55”
It is titled in both French and Italian:
“Amphithéâtre Flavius dit Colisée” “Anfiteatro Flavio detto il Colosseo”
I examined the printing under a 10X loupe and the image is composed of irregularly shaped and irregularly spaced lithographic marks rather than an obvious uniform modern halftone dot pattern.
These came to the United States from Italy and have been preserved and professionally displayed in substantial black frames.
The original Rome dans sa Grandeur series was published in France in the 19th century and consisted of detailed lithographic views of ancient and historic Rome.
I have not had these professionally authenticated, so they are being offered as attributed period lithographs based on the visible publisher, artist and title markings. Please review the detailed photographs.
A striking pair for a collector of antique prints, French lithography, Roman history, Italian art, Grand Tour memorabilia or architectural artwork.
