Shadow is a 21/22-year-old grade Appaloosa mare with plenty of energy and a whole lot of life left in her! She is looking for her next adventure and would make an excellent partner for someone who loves hitting the trails, exploring, or hunting. In her younger years, Shadow was used for 4-H, rodeo queening, parades, and hunting. We purchased her as a kids’ horse, and while she has been ridden and handled by several grandchildren and lots by my mother in law! She is safe to be around, she is definitely not a “push-button” horse for a completely inexperienced rider. She knows how to take advantage of a rider who doesn’t give her clear direction and may occasionally decide to do her own thing. She won’t take off with anyone, but she can be stubborn and needs someone who knows how to stay consistent and be the leader.
Because of this, we would recommend Shadow for an intermediate rider or handler, if she was on a trail ride with other horses, she would be just fine for a kiddo! She does not enjoy arena work and has absolutely no interest in going around in circles, but put her on the trail and she is an absolute angel! We truly believe she would excel as a trail riding or hunting horse. She has incredible stamina and could go all day.
She is great for the farrier, loads well in both slant-load and straight-load trailers, and is very friendly and “in your pocket.” She may also need a somewhat experienced handler when it comes to lunging, although she has been led around and handled safely by plenty of children. Sometimes she just has a little bit of an attitude… but don’t we all? 🤭
We are only her second owners and are helping list her for my mother-in-law, who is getting older and is ready to be done with horses.
Please contact my mother-in-law, Kathy, if you would like to come meet Shadow! She is located in Dayton, Idaho.
